Challenge:

Coulmed, located in Springfield, New Jersey, is a global supplier of high performing products for the medical industry. Twenty years after their last office renovation, their number of staff had doubled and they needed more space. Coupled with this was the necessity to substantially modernize the office so it was a workplace their younger staff liked to come to and talent could be retained. Despite the onset of a global pandemic, this needed to be achieved quickly and within budget.

Solution:

The design process was facilitated by Coulmed’s visit to the RI Workplace showroom where much of what they saw they loved. They chose to incorporate several similar features into their own space while still tailoring the design to their specific needs. The office layout was carefully planned to increase staff capacity and maximize usable space per square foot. RI Workplace creatively integrated some of the existing building conditions into the new modernized design, saving time and money. For example, the wood ceiling structure once covered over in ceiling tile was exposed and used as the central theme of the new open loft-style ceiling. Several collaborative areas were included such as a conference room, a dedicated Zoom room and a colorful bee hive to serve the needs of the growing team. Three individual bathrooms were built for increased privacy. A spacious kitchen with a relaxed seating area was thought of particularly for the younger staff and a full size wall mural of the NYC skyline with two comfy basket swings in front were added for visual appeal and fun. Despite labor shortages and extensive logistical delays caused by the pandemic, RI Workplace was able to complete the entire office renovation within budget in just 2 ½ months .

Results:

Careful attention to detail throughout the early stages of the project enabled a thorough budget analysis up front so there were no surprise costs once the project was underway. As a supplier of the medical industry and therefore a key player in the pandemic environment, Coulmed was able to continue their business effectively and service their clients without disruption. The team was able to return to the new exciting office space on the exact date RI Workplace promised with fresh vigor and inspiration.
